Vaikom is in fact on the oldest townships in Kerala and has many beautiful and must-visit spots which are still untouched by modernity. This attractive township on the western side of Kottayam district is bounded by the enchanting Vembanad Lake. The centre of attraction of Vaikom is the ancient Mahadeva temple. This Shiva temple in Vaikom is one of the divine places in Kerala. The spellbound architecture of Vaikom Mahadeva temple allures a lot of visitors with its divine charm.

The present structure of the temple dates back to the 16th century. Vaikom Mahadeva temple also has deluding epic architecture & murals of 18th century. The food delicacies of the Vaikom is very synonymous in Kerala. Especially, the fish prepared in Syrian Christian style is very popular amoung visitors. The Brahmin community here making use of the rich variety of vegetables and fruits to turn them to a healthy, delicious and nutritious living.

Vaikom Mahadeva Temple

Vaikom is famous for the Siva temple named Vaikom Mahadevar Temple. The temple, situated within the premise of 8 acres of land, was believed to be built by Parasurama - founder of Kerala.

Vaikathashtami

Vaikathashtami festivals are held annually, one is in Kumbham (February-March) and the other is in Vrischikam (November-December) of which the latter is more popular.

    Vaikom Mahadeva temple, situated on the banks of the Vembanad Lake at Vaikom (Vaikkom), with its fascinating Kerala style temple architecture is a spectacle in itself.

    St. Joseph Forane Church

    St. Joseph Forane Church, located at Pallippurathussery, Vaikom was established in 1391 AD. There are about 650 families under this parish. It was generally believed that the representatives of this church had taken part in the Synod of Diamper (1599).

By Taxi

Local taxis are also available at cheap rates. There are many car rental companies offering cars with drivers or self drive. Rates are around Rs 7 per km but there are all sorts of extras.

By Boat

When you are visiting places like Vaikom, it is better to opt for boats, as many places in Kuttanad are inaccessible by road. There are also good ferry services between places that are widely used by the locals, a cheap and scenic way of getting around.

Many attractions are near by one another so you could walk between them.
